In 1969, Caribbean Junior College, the predecessor institution of Caribbean University, was founded in the city of Bayamón, Puerto Rico. This is characterized as a private education institution, non-profit, co-educational and non-sectarian. Caribbean University was authorized by the Higher Education Council of Puerto Rico to offer associate degrees in 1974 and baccalaureate degrees in 1978. In 1977, it received its first accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The following year, the Higher Education Council authorized the Institution to offer academic programs at the baccalaureate level, because Caribbean Junior College was renamed Caribbean University College. The change of name to Caribbean University occurred in January of 1990. In December of 1991 it received authorization to offer graduated studies: Masters in Education with specialization in Administration and Educational Supervision, and another with specialization in Special Education. In 2006 it obtained the approval of the license of the General Council of Education to initiate the programs of the Vocational Technical Division and in 2016 the approval of license by the CEPR for all the centers of a Vocational Technical Division with the practical nursing program. In 2012, the CEPR authorized the start of a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD.) In Education with a specialty in Curriculum and Teaching. In 2015, accreditation is obtained for Engineering programs by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the Engineering, Civil and Electrical Sciences programs. At present, Caribbean University has accredited all its programs by the Middle State Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
