Utuado was founded in 1739. It is known as the "City of Viví" and the town of "Los montañeses". Its patron is Saint Michael the Archangel. The territory of the municipality extends across 299 square kilometers (115 square miles). It is made up of the neighborhoods: Utuado-town, Angeles, Arenas, Caguana, Caníaco, Caonillas Arriba, Caonillas Abajo, Consejo, Don Alonso, Guaónico, Las Palmas, Limón, Mameyes Abajo, Paso Palmas, Río Abajo, Roncador, Sabana Grande, I jumped down, I jumped up, Santa Isabel, Santa Rosa, Tetuán, I lived up and I lived down. This municipality has 35,336 Utuadeños (2000 Census). Utuado's economy is based mostly on agriculture. Coffee and other minor fruits are grown. The municipality also has textile and paper product factories. The town hall for the town of Utuado dates back to the early 20th century, and its architectural style integrates both neoclassical and art deco practices.
