Younger Travelers and Southerners Boost 2024 Holiday Travel Plans

About 43% of American travelers currently plan to travel at least 50 miles from home to celebrate an upcoming Holiday, according to the September issue of the State of the American Traveler from Future Partners. Younger generations are more likely to drive volume for the upcoming season, as are those living in the South (48%). On average, most holiday trip planning takes place three months in advance, and this year, they plan to spend $6,466 on average, including airfare.

Nearly a third of visitors made reservations three months before their Q4 2024 trip, according to Puerto Rico’s Visitors Profile Study. In 2023, reservations were made with similar anticipation. Other travelers booked with an even shorter amount of time. About 27% did it within four to eight weeks, and 36% booked travel within one month of arrival. So far this year, visitors to Puerto Rico have spent approximately $2,900 on average, not including airfare.

According to the U.S. Travel Association, U.S. leisure hotel demand is pacing -8% during early November. However, U.S. domestic holiday bookings are pacing above last year.
